Hippies sleeping over in Vondelpark in the summer of 1975 / Amsterdam was a popular stop for hippies to catch the
'Magic Bus' early on the 'Hippie Trail'. The Dutch capital was the epicentre of
hippie subculture back in the day. Before 1970, the hippies would sleep over at
Dam Square and were known as the Damslapers (Dam
Sleepers).
They faced a lot of resistance and a sleeping ban was eventually
introduced, forcing the hippies to move to Vondelpark. Every summer, between
May 28 and September 1, this would be their gathering spot till the hippie era
came to an end in the late '70s.
